How to get rid of your C-section pouch

c-section scar management Dec 28, 2022

What is a C-section pouch?

Firstly, what is a C-section pouch? A C-section pouch is excess tissue (skin and fat) that hangs over the top of the C-section scar. It is also known as a C-section pooch, C-section overhang or C-section shelf.

What causes a C-section pouch?

There are a number of possible causes, one main one being tight C-section scar tissue.

After your C-section, during the healing process, scar adhesions may develop. Adhesions occur when abnormal bands of tissue form between the different layers of healing tissue causing them to become ‘stuck’ together.

Adhesions may be responsible for many problems including

  • Persistent scar pain or sensitivity
  • Scar numbness
  • Tugging/tightness
  • Pelvic pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Painful periods
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Problems with urinary incontinence
  • Painful intercourse
  • Fertility problems

Adhesions may also be contributing to your C-section pouch.

How can I get rid of my C-section pouch?

As well as regular exercise and healthy eating, C-section scar massage can improve movement in the skin and soft tissues around the scar allowing all the layers of tissue affected by the scar to move normally against one another.

C-section scar massage can also help reduce swelling in the tissues overhanging your C-section scar.
